Next Step in Sutherland Naming Review: Advisory Committee Will Hear From Public Tomorrow Evening
(ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Virginia) – Residents in the Sutherland, Baker-Butler, Hollymead, and Stony Point school communities will have the opportunity tomorrow evening, June 9, to offer their views on 10 possible names now under consideration for Mortimer Y. Sutherland Middle School. The school’s naming review, as directed by the School Board, is being conducted by a community advisory committee appointed earlier this year.
Tomorrow evening’s meeting is the second of two community meetings to provide feedback to the committee. Last month, committee members narrowed a list of names suggested in an initial survey and the first community meeting to 10. Those 10 suggestions were the subject of a second community opinion survey that concluded last week with nearly 900 responses.
Tomorrow’s meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. and will be livestreamed at http://streaming.k12albemarle.org/ACPS/player.htm?xml/publicmeeting.xml. Those who wish to offer their views are asked to email SchoolNamingReview@k12albemarle.org.
Following the meeting, the advisory committee will select three names as finalists. If any of the finalists is the name of an individual, policy requires that the advisory committee research that person’s role in the community in view of the school division’s four values of excellence, young people, community, and respect. The committee will recommend one name to Superintendent Dr. Matthew Haas for his consideration. If the committee is unable to agree on a single name, Dr. Haas will review the three names selected as finalists. Dr. Haas’ recommendation will go to the School Board, which will make the ultimate decision.
