Virginia Standards of Quality require each school division to ". . . conduct a program. . . for the early identification of gifted and talented students" and ". . . offer appropriately differentiated instructional opportunities. . .for identified gifted and talented students." Specific state regulations define the establishment of uniform identification procedures based on multiple criteria, the development of a local plan for gifted education, and the establishment of an advisory committee. A copy of Albemarle's local plan for gifted education is available in each school and on this website. The local plan outlines specific, division-wide information related to philosophy, program goals and objectives, identification and placement of students, curricular goals and service options, procedures for staff selection and training, and procedures for evaluation services. The plan also defines five-year goals for program growth and improvement. In addition, the division plan includes details about Albemarle's Gifted Advisory Committee. This committee - comprised of parents of identified students, gifted services staff members, community members, administrators and classroom teachers - meets five times a year. The committee advises the School Board of the educational needs of gifted students in our division and reviews the local plan annually. Each school has one representative on the committee.
